The city is the fifth-largest city in Afghanistan by population and is a popular religious destination for a shrine attributed to the 1st Shia Imam, Ali.

Mazar-i-Sharif is an ancient city with plenty of historical attraction. The city also serves as the major trading center in northern Afghanistan, with agriculture accounting for the major part of the economy.
